Can Pinterest drive your online sales?

Pinterest is still the world’s fourth largest driver of web traffic, standing above Yahoo, Bing and even Twitter. But how often do those visits mean sales? The jury is still out on that question, but eCommerce company Shopify says that Pinterest users are 10% more likely to make a purchase.

On the other hand, Zappos discovered that Pinterest users spent less than visitors coming from Facebook or Twitter, even though they shared more from the site.

Just in time for the year’s biggest buying season, Pinterest has launched ‘secret boards’ as new method for people to privately pin holiday gift ideas. Right now users are limited to just three private boards at the moment.

ON: A Digg Into Yahoo

0317_buzz

Three weeks after the launch of its news aggregation service,
Buzz, Yahoo is driving 10% less traffic to publishers' websites
than its primary competitor, Digg.com, according to this article from
Business Week. Digg, which has long been the king of social news, is
feeling the heat, even though Buzz is still technically in beta.

Sure, Yahoo's new service is already driving almost as much traffic to
outside Web articles as Digg does. But how does that help Yahoo?

The article does a good job in digging past the press releases that Yahoo! has been issuing to bloggers and the press.

Check it out in BusinessWeek >

Was strolling through my lists of feeds and ran across the UK Design Council's series of in-depth articles on how design is managed, with practical ideas and real-life examples of design being used for business success.  The companies that participated in the study were Alessi, BSkyB, BT,
LEGO, Microsoft, Sony, Starbucks, Virgin Atlantic, Whirlpool, Xerox and

Flickr needs video. Too often I return from a trip, upload pictures
to Flickr and then just store the videos on my hard drive. I want those
videos right next to the photos, with the same tags and in the same
sets (albums).  So are the rumors true?  Is Flickr going to be Yahoo's CGV platform?

ON: Yahoo’s Acquisition Gossip

Picture_1
The buzz on the tech street is that while Yahoo has made some smart acquisitions recently, like the great people over at Right Media, that Yahoo is up for grabs as well.

This has been rumor for a while now...  I have heard speculation that it could be acquired by MSN and or SONY...  I think the entertainment/media angle would be smart.  But word from inside of a mega media conglomerate say otherwise.  Right now Yahoo is in serious negotiations with a leading global entertainment content
company, who has a lock up on youth television, motion pictures and a wide range of
digital media.

I have two inside sources who have told me that their parent company is looking to benefit from
Yahoo’s digital distribution backbone.  Stay tuned...  I will reveal the company's name soon.

ON: Going Green The Yahoo Way

Picture_5

Yahoo has introduced Yahoo Green today, an online education program
that will offer users the latest environmental news and consumer tips,
Reuters reports (via Environmental Leader).

he site, which has Ford and its Bold Moves campaign as an
advertiser, looks like a major expansion of the 18Seconds site that
Yahoo developed to track CFL purchases at national, state and local levels, ranking each city and state based on per capita sales.

Earlier this year, Yahoo asked
ad agencies to create and submit proposals for a new campaign from the
search/ad giant that encourages environmental responsibility - it’s not
clear if this site is part of one of those proposals.

Last month, Yahoo said it would become “carbon neutral” as a company by the end of 2007.

Along with the new site, Yahoo has launched an online contest where
it will donate 10 hybrid-fueled Ford Escape taxis to the U.S. city
where the most Yahoo users sign up to take the personal environmental
pledge or take part in other environmental themed activities on Yahoo
sites. It donated another 10 hybrid taxis to New York, where the
campaign launch took place, replacing an equal number of conventional
taxis.

Yahoo rivals like Google and Microsoft are racing to outdo one
another with corporate environmental measures. MSN Network is heavily
involved with the Live Earth concerts. In partnership with Kevin Wall,
executive producer of Live 8 and CEO of the Control Room, it launched
Save Our Selves (SOS) - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis.

Google announced it was constructing a solar electricity system for
its Mountain View, California, headquarters campus with a total
capacity of 1.6 megawatts – enough to supply 1,000 average California
homes. Google also joined the Business Council on Climate Change, a
coalition of San Francisco Bay Area businesses that promise to report
and reduce carbon emissions, share the best green practices and
advocate for policies to address global warming.

ON: Pipes A New Data Mashup

Picture_5_8

I must thank the chaps @ threeminds for this one... Pipes is a new hosted service that lets you remix feeds and create new
data mashups in a visual programming environment.  This is my favorite thing this week. Yahoo!Pipes’ is a mash-up of RSS feeds – sounds complicated but actually incredible simple. You pick one feed – say, The New York Times news stream – and stick it through another web 2.0 application – say, Flickr.
The result? A whole bunch of images related to all of the key words and
phrases which appear in the news that day. So easy, so clever, so
graphic. Well done Yahoo!

http://pipes.yahoo.com

The name of the
service pays tribute to the Unix pipes, which let programmers do
astonishingly clever things by making it easy to chain simple utilities
together on the command line.  Yahoo! is blowing up the "series of tubes" today with the launch of this new web service.

Check it out and share your mashups here!
